Kazan Innovative University named after V.G. Timiryasov has improved its position in Russia's first national ranking of universities for the quality of artificial intelligence education. According to the 2026 results, KIU was awarded the D++ category, moving up one level compared with the previous year. A particularly notable achievement is that KIU ranked second among all private universities included in the ranking.
The ranking methodology has been officially approved by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. The ranking is developed by the Artificial Intelligence Alliance under the direct mandate of the President of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Russian Federation.
The ranking serves as a key benchmark for the labour market. It is used by Russia's leading technology companies, including Sber, Yandex, and Gazprom Neft, when recruiting graduates, while also providing the government with an important measure of the quality of AI education.
The scale of the assessment is impressive. This year, the ranking included 193 universities from 58 regions of Russia, including Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman, ITMO University, and many others. Six universities from the Republic of Tatarstan were represented in the ranking.
To be included in the ranking and achieve a high category, universities underwent a comprehensive evaluation across four areas: graduate employability, the relevance of AI curricula, the quality of the educational environment, and contributions to the development of AI education at the school level. The ranking was based on publicly available university data as well as the findings of independent research conducted by the Artificial Intelligence Alliance. This included surveys of more than 150 employers on graduate employability and over 12,000 students on the quality of the educational environment. The greatest weight in the overall assessment was given to graduate employability.
KIU continues to strengthen its position as one of Russia's and the Republic of Tatarstan's leading centers for training specialists in digital technologies while demonstrating steady progress by consistently improving its ranking category.
