General information & History
Kazan Innovative University was founded in 1994 as an Institute of Economics, Management and Law. In 2016, the institute received the status of a university and was renamed Kazan Innovative University named after its founder, Professor Vitaly G. Timiryasov.
KIU is located in Kazan, venue of the wide range of international political, sports, and cultural activities of Russia (BRICS Summit, Russia-ASEAN Summit, FIFA World Cup, Phygital Games of the Future).
KIU is the largest scientific center in the Volga region of Russia, carrying out system research in a wide range of knowledge.
Kazan Innovative University is among the top five in terms of the Hirsch Index and the number of external citations among all universities in the Republic of Tatarstan.
The University is among 100 best Russian higher educational institutions and 5 top best private universities of Russia, it has the official "European quality" golden medal for implementation of the Quality Management system (ISO 9001:2008) and the full member of international association supporting hospitality and tourism education and training.
Since 2010, the teachers of the University annually become winners of the competitions: "Best Innovation Lecture" and "The best university teacher."

The university offers Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programs in economics, law, psychology, management, design, tourism, linguistics, intercultural communication, and pedagogy. All degree programs follow international credit standards, making it possible to transfer credits or study abroad.
The university has a total student population of approximately 16,000, including students from more than 20 countries around the world, and the teaching staff consists of 300 Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors, 80% of them have academic degrees and titles.
The academic year is divided into two semesters. The fall semester runs from September through January, and the spring semester runs from February through June. During July and August students may take optional summer courses or participate in internships.
In KIU, more than 50 international and All-Russian scientific and practical conferences and forums have been organized, the total number of participants of which exceeded 15,000 people.
KIU, together with its faculty members, students, and postgraduate researchers, is a regular winner and recipient of awards in numerous prestigious competitions. These include national competitions in information technology and cybersecurity, scientific, and applied research contests on anti-corruption initiatives, the Grant Competition of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan, and republican competitions such as 50 Best Innovative Ideas, Best Young Scientist, and the Republican Competition of Student and Postgraduate Research Papers named after Nikolai Lobachevsky, among others.
In 2001, the law clinic of the university was founded, on the basis of which the public reception of the Prosecutor's Office of Tatarstan currently operates.
Since 2011, KIU has been the anchor university of the scientific and educational cluster of the Republic of Tatarstan in the field of trade, hospitality, and service.
In 2013, the practical need to develop and implement models and methods of inclusion led to the establishment of the VERA Center for Adaptation, Rehabilitation, and Resocializtion at the University. More than 100 children have received professional consultations and diagnostic services at the VERA Center, the majority of whom are children with disabilities and their parents.
In 2017, an interdisciplinary institute was established at the university in order to implement innovative programs with large enterprises of Tatarstan.
Since 2016, KIU has been included in the National University Ranking. In the same year, KIU made its vivid debut in the WorldSkills movement.
Since 2018 Kazan Innovative University is full member of international association supporting hospitality and tourism education and training.
In 2018, the project "Creation and Development of a Continuous Inclusive Education System in the Republic of Tatarstan" was recognized as the best project of its kind in Russia and was recommended for replication across all regions of the country.
The university was recognized as a "University of Student Science", a "University of Youth Science" and awarded a diploma "For a unique system of training young scientists" by the Movement of young scientists and specialists of the Republic of Tatarstan.
In 2023, KIU took the first place in terms of "education" and "innovation" among private universities in Russia, and in 2022 it took the first place in Russia among private universities in the index of effectiveness of educational work.
In 2024, the only BRICS auditorium in Russia was opened in KIU. The opening ceremony of the auditorium was attended by Sergey Ryabkov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
In 2026, KIU entered the TOP 50 Russian universities in the field of Public and Municipal Administration.
KIU has developed a social support program for students facing difficult life circumstances. Under this program, approximately 300 children from low-income and large families, as well as around 150 orphans and graduates of the Raifa Monastery Children's Corps, have received tuition-free education. More than 200 students have benefited from various tuition concessions and financial aid measures. In addition, the Foundation named after Vitaly G. Timiryasov, the University's founder and first Rector, annually provides grant support to around 100 students who have demonstrated outstanding individual achievements.
