Maslenitsa is an ancient Slavic holiday, one of the most beloved in Russia. The event is celebrated at the end of winter. Thus, Russians say “goodbye” to winter and meet spring.

At this time, it is customary to set tables, bake pancakes, participate in different competitions, sing songs, dance, jump over a fire and burn a scarecrow that symbolizes winter.

Large-scale festivities in honor of the last day of Maslenitsa took place on the Island Sviyazhsk last weekend. Participants of the event were thousands of people among whom were also teachers and foreign students of KIU.

A rich program was organized for guests. So all, who came, could take part in a master-class on a history of a creation of Russian pancakes and bake a real pancake cake. In addition, guests of the island danced and sang songs. In the end, there was a traditional burning of the scarecrow.

It was an excellent opportunity for foreign students of KIU to get acquainted with the Russian culture and join the traditions.
