The summer language camp hosted by Northwest University in Xi'an, China, for students of the Faculty of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication at KIU has come to an end.

For the participants, the two weeks spent in Xi'an became much more than an internship – they were a true journey through the centuries. Two weeks of intensive study and cultural immersion allowed the students not only to improve their Chinese language skills but also to experience the spirit of China firsthand, from its ancient traditions to its modern-day realities.

The internship program was designed so that theory was immediately reinforced through practice, turning the language from a collection of characters into a living tool for communication. Every day, students attended Chinese language classes focused on speaking practice, listening comprehension, and understanding the cultural nuances hidden behind words. Instructors helped them explore not only grammar but also the subtleties of speech etiquette, an essential component of effective intercultural interaction.





It is worth noting that language learning extended far beyond the classroom. An important part of the program consisted of activities introducing students to traditional Chinese culture. Participants learned the art of paper cutting, a delicate craft in which every pattern carries symbolic meaning. Practical wushu classes provided not only an introduction to Chinese martial arts but also an opportunity to experience the philosophy of movement and the discipline of body and mind that are deeply rooted in Chinese tradition. These activities helped students see how language is intertwined with a nation's way of life and worldview.

For future specialists in linguistics and intercultural communication, this internship became an important step in their professional development. Students not only strengthened their language skills but also learned to recognize the cultural context behind words, interprete non-verbal cues, and take historical factors into account in communication. Such experience cannot be gained from textbooks alone – it is developed through personal immersion and a genuine interest in another culture. The internship in Xi'an demonstrated that learning a language is always a path to people, their history, and their values. For KIU students, this journey proved not only educational but also truly inspiring.
